Cavs look to complete sweep on Monday night

Filed under: Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio Basketball — @ 7:59 pm

The Cleveland Cavaliers are one win away from advancing to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. After a 98-92 victory at Washington on Saturday, the Cavs lead the Wizards 3-0 and look to complete the sweep on Monday night.

All five Cavalier starters finished with double-digit scoring numbers on Saturday led by LeBron James with 30 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas with 24.

The Cavs opponent in the second round, should they indeed defeat the Wizards, will be the winner of the #3 Toronto Raptors vs. the #6 New Jersey Nets. The Nets currently lead the series 2-1 with game four in New Jersey this evening.

In other playoff action, the #1 Detroit Pistons swept the #8 Orlando Magic and the #5 Chicago Bulls swept the #4 Miami Heat in the Eatern Conference Playoffs. The Pistons and Bulls will now meet in the second round. In the Western Conference Playoffs, the #8 Golden State Warriors lead the #1 Dallas Mavericks 2-1 with game four tonight, the #2 Phoenix Suns lead the #7 LA Lakers 3-1, the #3 San Antonio Spurs lead the #6 Denver Nuggets 2-1 and the #4 & #5 Utah Jazz & Houston Rockets are tied 2-2.

Browns keep dealing, draft UNLV Cornerback Wright

Filed under: Cleveland Browns, Ohio Football — @ 8:45 pm

The Cleveland Browns have been makings deals all day. After trading for Brady Quinn earlier in day, the Browns again made a deal with the Dallas Cowboys, this time sending their 3rd, 4th and 6th-round picks for the Cowboys’ 2nd & 6th-round picks. The Browns then used that 2nd round pick and #53 overall on UNLV cornerback Eric Wright. Wright, the former CB from USC, has had quite the shady past, causing the media to question this pick. While his physical skills are not in question, his decision-making off the field is.

Browns make deal to get Quinn, Bengals take CB, RB

Filed under: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Ohio Football — @ 7:14 pm

Earlier today I mentioned the Bengals were on the clock, and that pick was an easy decision. The Cornerback that Mel Kiper had #1 on his board, Leon Hall of Michigan, was selected #18 to the Bengals. Just a few picks later, with the Dallas Cowboys on the clock for the #22 pick, the Cleveland Browns dealt their #2 pick (#36 overall) and their 2008 first-round pick for the Cowboys’ #22 pick, and followed that deal by selecting Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn.

In the second round, the Bengals used the 49th overall pick to select RB Kenny Irons from Auburn. With that pick the Bengals are done drafting today as they do not have a 3rd round pick. The Browns, meanwhile, will be picking 3rd in the 3rd round with the 67th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Browns rumors swirling, Bengals turn coming up

Filed under: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Ohio Football — @ 2:33 pm

The 2007 NFL Draft has proven to be an exciting one, and more excitement could be coming for Ohio football teams. Pick #17 has been made meaning the Cincinnati Bengals are on the clock. In our NFL Mock Draft & preview, Ohio sports expert Dan Whymyer labeled Darrelle Revis, CB from Pitt as his #18 pick, but Revis was already selected by the New York Jets @ #14. However, CB Leon Hall from Michigan was rated higher by Mel Kiper, so if the Bengals are set on a CB with this pick then Hall may be their man.

Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that the Cleveland Browns are making calls to see if they can move up as Brady Quinn continues to be available. After Quinn was passed over at #9 it became clear that the need for a QB was non-existent for the teams immediately after Miami in the draft. We have now come to #18, and the players that was once expected to be the #1 pick overall is in danger of sliding farther down the board. Dallas at #22 is one rumored home for Quinn and Jacksonville at #21 may still be an option, but the Jaguars just dealt the #17 pick to Denver, thus passing on an opportunity for Quinn, so that seems unlikely.

Browns make the right move, select OT Thomas

Filed under: Cleveland Browns, Ohio Football — @ 1:30 pm

The Cleveland Browns made the right pick today, the pick I was hoping for. With the #3 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft the Browns selected Joe Thomas, OT from Wisconsin. While many in the media thought Brady Quinn would be the Browns’ pick, Cleveland looks to have made a wise decision as almost 10 picks later Quinn is still on the board.

As I had hoped, Cleveland has made a committment to the Offensive Line. With signings in the past few years including Eric Steinbach in 2007 and LaCharles Bentley in 2006, the Browns have proven that they are making the effort needed to shorre up the O-Line, now we just need a little of the Cleveland bad luck to fade away.

NFL Draft 2007: Browns are on the clock

Filed under: Cleveland Browns, Ohio Football — @ 11:36 am

The 2007 NFL Draft is here and the first two picks have been made meaning the Cleveland Browns are on the clock. JaMarcus Russell went #1 to the Oakland Raiders and Calvin Johnson was selected #2 by the Detroit Lions, but who will the Browns pick?

My pick if I were the GM? Joe Thomas, OT from Wisconsin. Shore up the offensive line and do it now. This regime under GM Phil Savagae has shown the desire to solidify the Browns offensive line, something that Cleveland did not do in the prior 6 years before Savagae was hired. The selection of a potential All-Pro offensive tackle could shore up on side of the Browns O-Line for 8-10+ years. Make the pick, and please, don’t take another QB.

NFL Draft: Could The Cleveland Browns Be Any Dumber?

Filed under: Cleveland Browns, Ohio Football — dwhit @ 9:27 am

If the latest rumor reported on SportsCenter is more than a rumor, no, no they could not be any dumber. What am I talking about? Here we go…

At about 10:00 am EST, ESPN correspondent Ed Werder who was reporting from outside the Raiders war room in Oakland broke in to the broadcast with a report. Werder reported that there is about a 25% chance that the Raiders will actually move the #1 pick, and that there have been two teams in serious discussions with the Raiders about trading for the overall #1 pick in today’s draft.

Werder goes on to report that the Cleveland Browns have been one of the teams in serious discussions with the Raiders about moving from #3 up to #1 (apparently in an effort to land JaMarcus Russell). Apparently the Raiders and Browns have been talking about a package of multiple picks and Clevelands 2006 1st rounder, Kamerion Wimbley.

So there you have it, the Browns, who desperately need to find several impact players in this draft are talking about trading away several picks, and one of their few solid players. All so they can move from #3 to #1 overall and draft a quarterback who while physically gifted, is certainly a project. There’s no way the Browns can let him sit, learn and develop for 1-2 years. Hopefully for Browns fans this is just a draft-day rumor. It almost has to, right? This plan has “bad idea” written all over it.

Cavs hold on for win, up 2-0 over Wizards

Filed under: Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio Basketball — @ 9:43 pm

In a series that the critics in the media feel that the Cleveland Cavaiers should be dominating, the most important thing is this; Cavaliers 2, Wizards 0. Heading to Washington for Saturday’s contest, the Cavs are looking to bury a Wizards team that is without injured stars Gilbert Arenas & Caron Butler. A win on Saturday followed by another win on Monday would complete a sweep, something that the Cavs could benefit from immensely thanks to injuries of their own. With LeBron James hobbled by a sprained ankle, the extra time off could do wonders towards

Cleveland making a deeper run into the playoffs. With New Jersey and

Toronto tied at 1-1, the guarantee of an extra day or two of rest may be the difference in a second round disappointment and a trip to the Finals.

The key to playoff success for the Cavs is clear; it is going to be who can step up and help LeBron lead the team each night. Despite the signing of Larry Hughes for this purpose, Hughes has not proven to be that consistent #2 scorer for the Cavs night in and night out. Hughes was that guy in Game One of this series scoring 27 points in leading the Cavs to a 15-point win. Game Two’s big performance came from power forward Drew Gooden. Gooden’s 24 points and 14 rebounds were huge in the Cavs win as Gooden scored 6 straight baskets and 15 points in the 2nd quarter alone. Going forward it will be up to the tandem of Hughes, Gooden, Zydrunas Ilgauskas & Sasha Pavlovic to step it up and supports LeBron. If this happens I could see the Cavs advancing as far as the NBA Finals, but if LeBron is left to carry the team all by himself, a problem which has plagues the Cavaliers in the past, then an early exit may be in the Cavs’ future.

Cavaliers resume playoff schedule Wednesday

Filed under: Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio Basketball — @ 9:13 pm

After starting their series with the Washington Wizards off with a 15-point win, the Cleveland Cavs are back in action on Wednesday night in Cleveland. Why NBA Playoff games need to be so spread out is beyond me, but Game 3 will be on Saturday in Washington, Game 4 on Monday also in Wahsington, then Game 5, if necessary will be back in Cleveland on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Monday night Detroit took a 2-0 series lead over Orlando and Houston also is up 2-0 in their series with Carols Boozer’s Utah Jazz. In Tuesday action, Toronto evened up their series with New Jersey at 1-1, Miami is @ Chicago and the LA Lakers are @ Phoenix.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a new Cleveland Cavs shirt or LeBron James Fathead wall poster, now’s the time to buy. With deal on all kinds of Cleveland Cavs merchandise in their NBA Team Fan Shop, DFN Sports has everything you are looking for.
