The Browns did the unthinkable, their offense played even worse than the previous weeks which seemed like an impossibility. The Statue was 12 of 29 for only 99 yards and added another interception to his already large total.Anderson has thrown 7 interceptions in 4 ½ games with a completion % of 43.8 and a QB rating of 40.6.Yet, the Statue keeps his job, astonishing.Oakland Raider QB JaMarcus Russell has been ridiculed by NFL analysts, players and coaches but his stats are better than the Statue. In 7 starts, Russell has completed 46.3%, thrown 8 interceptions and has a QB rating 47.2.What is Head Coach Eric Mangini thinking by not giving young QB Brady Quinn a shot? That is unexplainable.Mangini stated that the Statue gives him a much better chance of winning. What? The defense showed up again holding Packer QB Aaron Rodgers to 15 of 20 for 246 yards and three scores. They held the vaunted Packer offense to 31 points and kept the game close losing 31-3.The defensive back combination of Toast and Skirt were too much for Rogers and the Packer receivers; there were times they were even in the camera shot after a reception.Mangini and the Browns must have had a tremendous week of practice preparing for the Packers. This week they will look to do the same as they face the Bears in Chicago. The schizophrenic Bears laid an egg in Cincinnati getting pummeled by the Bengals 45-10.Bears QB Jay Cutler threw three interceptions on the day while Matt Forte was held to 24 yards on the ground. The Bear defense was demoralized by the Bengal offense as Carson Palmer threw for 233 yards and 5 touchdowns and former Bear Cedric Benson ran for 189 yards.Unlike the Browns, the 3-3 Bears are still in contention for the NFC North title and a wild card shot and will be ready to play in front of their home fans.
Prediction: Expect more of the same for the Browns as they continue to step backwards.Jay Cutler will have his way with Toast and Skirt as they light up Solider Field with little or no resistance. The Statue will complete under 50% of his passes and continue to turn the ball over at an alarming rate why Brady Quinn can only sit and watch.

Next week we will offer a mid season review of the Browns.Scott Dryden, Senior Writer
With the criticism mounting, QB Terrelle Pryor bounced back with a very good performance against Minnesota. The sophomore signal caller threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as the Buckeyes throttled the Golden Gophers 38-7.Pryor looked fluent and relaxed as he looked like the player Buckeye Nation had been waiting for. This week, Ohio State steps out of conference to face New Mexico State. The Aggies are 3-5 on the season and will provide little resistance against the bigger, faster and stronger Buckeyes.
Prediction: Terrelle Pryor will have another big day as the offense will accumulate a ton of yardage and light up the scoreboard.RBs Boom Herron and Brandon Saine may not play but freshmen RBs Jordan Hall and Jermil Martin played well last week. The Buckeyes cruise in front of the home faithful.
The Bearcats, behind backup QB Zach Collaros, throttled rival Louisville 41-10.Collaros was an incredible 15 of 17 for 253 yards and three scores.Collaros may not have the big arm of Tony Pike but he is extremely athletic and brings a swagger to the offense. The 3-4 Syracuse Orangemen are coming off a 28-14 victory over Akron. In the victory Delone Carter ran for 170 yards and three scores. The Greg Paulus story hasn’t been what Orangemen fans have hoped for but with all things considered, he has hung in there and kept Syracuse near the .500 mark.Syracuse won only 3 games in 2008.
Prediction: Collaros or Pike will have a big day in the Carrier Dome as the Cuse defense will provide little resistance. The Bearcat defense should be able contain the Syracuse running game and force Paulus into mistakes.
The silence was deafening following the devastating loss to the Orlando Magic in the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals.LeBron James said nothing; he shook no hands, gave no post game interviews and left the building.Back in Ohio, Cleveland fans voiced their all too familiar slogan, “Wait Until Next Year”.On the court, Cavs Head Coach Mike Brown was out strategized by the Magic’s Stan Van Gundy who spread the floor and operated through the best center in the game, Dwight Howard. The Cavs’ brass knew a change was in order so they pulled off the biggest coup in the offseason by acquiring Shaquille O’Neal.O’Neal quickly stated Howard’s waltzes to the basket will not happen going forward. Can the Cavaliers end Cleveland’s 46 year title drought?
Starting Five:
G- Mo Williams: Williams had a very good campaign making the All Star team while averaging 17.8 PPG.The first two rounds were no different as Williams knocked down open jumpers and penetrated, setting up his teammates. In the ECF, Mo couldn’t buy a basket struggling throughout the series.Williams will bounce back nicely and work off of Shaq and LeBron and enjoy another All-Star season.
G- Delonte West: West’s story was similar to Williams in that he had a very solid season, played well in the 1st and 2nd round then struggled in the ECF.West brings tenacity and grit to the shooting guard position.West has plenty of off court issues to deal with which may cost him some time.If so, off season acquisition Anthony Parker will be the starter.
F- LeBron James: The 24 year old phenom now has the inside presence he has longed for.LeBron should find the road to the path clearer with Shaq under the basket. He is the best all around player in the game and knows how to make his teammates better. His maturity is unfathomable for a 24 year old and he is the consummate leader. With his eyes locked on the prize, James will have his best season closing in on averaging a triple double.James, who turns 25 in December, will bring home another MVP trophy and this time the title as well.
F- Anderson Varejao: Andy brings intangibles to the table that are difficult to find.He is a solid rebounder and a very good defender but also brings energy and passion to the floor. On the offensive end, Varejao is underrated. He has good hands and shows an aptitude in finding lanes to cut to the basket. He will work well with O’Neal.
C- Shaquille O’Neal: The Big Aristotle comes to Cleveland with a lot to prove and championship aspirations.Shaq will bring a defensive prowess the Cavs have never had.O’Neal will match up well with Eastern Conference big men like Dwight Howard and Kevin Garnett. On the offensive end, O’Neal still draws double teams which will open up Cav shooters and of course the lanes for King James.Shaq is a very underrated passer and will find success finding James and the Cavs perimeter shooters. To quote Shaq, “A ring for the king” will be the goal for 2010.
Bench: The Cavaliers drafted forward Danny Greene from North Carolina. The rookie will see limited minutes but will be a good asset down the road. The signing of Anthony Parker, a versatile veteran, will prove very big throughout the season.Parker is a good defender and a tremendous shooter off of screens. The signing of Jamario Moon is very intriguing. The lanky, athletic Moon will be a very good defender on wing players such as Paul Pierce, Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter.Daniel “Booby” Gibson will continue to get minutes at both the point and shooting guard.Gibson is a clutch shooter and valuable defender.JJ Hickson will be the backup at the PF position.Hickson, drafted in 2008, continues to improve and will be a nice role player off the bench. All Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas will come off the bench. The 7’2” sharp shooter wore down in the ECF and offered little resistance against Dwight Howard.Z should play well down the stretch with less wear on the tires. The Cavs also signed Leon Powe who is coming off knee surgery.Powe is expected to come back this season and could be a valuable commodity during the playoffs.
Prediction:
EAST:
The Cavaliers toughest challengers in the East are the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic. The Celtics improved their roster by adding aging Rasheed Wallace and the versatile Marquis Daniels. If Kevin Garnett is healthy, the Celtics will be a very tough out.The 2008 Champions will be looking to recapture the title from their arch rival Los Angeles Lakers. The Magic ousted the Cavs in the 09 ECF before losing to the Lakers in the finals. The 09-10 Magic will look a bit different as they failed to resign sharpshooting Hedo Turkoglu. He will be replaced by athletic Vince Carter.Carter should be a good fit but is not the caliber of shooter that Turkoglu is.Although Atlanta, Washington and Toronto will be tough, the Eastern Conference is a three horse race.
The Cavaliers will defeat the Boston Celtics 4-2 in the ECF and make their second appearance in the NBA Finals.
WEST:
The Champion Lakers will look for a repeat with a significant acquisition in Ron Artest. The irritable Artest will fill the role of defensive stopper with the departure of Trevor Ariza. Many are pointing to Artest as the key addition to fuel another title run for the Lakers. However, Ariza was younger, longer and a much better fit for the Lakers system.Phil Jackson has a proven record managing superstars with attitude and will have the same success with Artest.Kobe Bryant proved why he is one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. The 31 year old megastar now has four rings with plenty of years left.Bryant averaged 26.8 PPG last season and should match those numbers in 09-10.Pau Gasol is one of the best big men in the league.Criticized for his play in the 2008 NBA Finals, Gasol bounced back in dominant fashion in the 2009 playoffs. The San Antonio Spurs look to regain their championship swagger. The 2007 champs added Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess which should ease the stress on the big three.Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli are the heart and soul of the franchise. If they can put a healthy season together the sky is the limit. The young Portland Trailblazers are immensely talented with championship aspirations. The team added veteran PG Andre Miller who will bring stability and experience to the position. The Blazers are led by the most underrated player in the league, Brandon Roy.Roy averaged 22.6 PPG, 5 APG and 4.7 boards a game in 08-09.Roy has a tremendous 1st step and is a great mid range jump shooter. The key to the season will be the growth of center Greg Oden.Oden was up and down in his first season and looked lethargic at times.During his collegiate career at Ohio State, Oden was lean and tremendously athletic.Upon entering the pro ranks, Oden bulked up and it affected his defensive prowess. In the offseason, Oden lost 13 pounds and has reportedly regained his athleticism.Critics forget that Oden is only 21 years old and no doubt will continue his improvement.PF LaMarcus Aldridge averaged 18 PPG and 7.5 RPG last season. He is a very good spot up shooter and offers a tough matchup for any team in the league.Like the Eastern Conference, the Western Conference is also a three horse race.
The Spurs regain their spot into the NBA Finals by outlasting the Lakers in a very intense, physical WCF.The difference will be the Spurs athleticism and the additions of Jefferson and McDyess.Tim Duncan outplays Gasol in what will go down as a classic 7th game.
NBA Finals:
The Cavaliers face the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals for the second time. The 1st time was an ugly affair in the 07 Finals s in which the Spurs cruised to the sweep. This time, LeBron James and Shaq will be too much for the Spurs to handle. The Cavs end the Cleveland Curse and roll to the title 4 games to 2.
The Sports CognoscentiCleveland Browns vs. Green Bay PackersOctober 25th 1:00 ETLine: Green Bay -9The Browns face a very difficult foe in the Green Bay Packers. It will be a homecoming of sorts as the Packers’ roster includes former Ohio State All-American AJ Hawk who is married to Brady Quinn’s sister and Clay Matthews who is the son of former Browns’ linebacker of the same name. That may be the only joy Cleveland fans get on a blustery day on the shores of Lake Erie.On the offense side of the ball, the Browns will face a tough Packer defense that employs a 3-4 set.The Statue, Derek Anderson, will remain the starting QB which is extremely difficult to comprehend.Brady Quinn started three games against teams that have a combined record of 15-3 and have very good defenses yet Quinn was benched despite completing 61% of his passes.Quinn threw 3 interceptions in those games for a QB rating of 62.9.#10’s stats were not scintillating but for a QB who has only 6 starts under his belt it wasn’t horrible. For the season, The Statue has started three games and played a half in another, in those games he has thrown 6 interceptions with only 2 touchdowns and completed a paltry 44% of his passes. The Statue’s QB rating is 41.7.By comparison, Washington QB Jason Campbell is under immense fire, has a QB rating of 84.2 with 6 touchdowns and 6 picks while completing 66% of his passes. In the last two games DA has led the Browns to a whopping 14 points combined. In reality the Browns could sign a backup QB from the CFL and he could do no worse yet BQ remains on the pine. How and why does the Statue keep his job? That is a question that has no logical answer. The Browns will once again rely on their special teams to generate points. The running game will have to be a factor behind Jamal Lewis and Jerome Harrison to have chance.Look for Josh Cribbs to see more time in the Wildcat formation and add some energy to the running game.If the Browns line up receivers instead of The Statue at wide out, Cribbs may be able to make some plays through the air as well.Rookie WR Mohamed Massaquoi will make some plays as he continues to progress. On defense the Browns will be missing their leading tackler D’Qwell Jackson who is out for the season with a shoulder injury. The Packer’s passing game behind Aaron Rodgers will be a tough test for Toast (Eric Wright) and Skirt (Brandon McDonald).Toast was in a car wreck during the week but may be able to play. The LB corp will be tested by Donald Driver who loves to run underneath routes.Look for rookie linebackers David Veikune and Kaluka Maiava to get some playing time. The special teams unit will be a major factor led by Mr. Everything Josh Cribbs.Cribbs makes big plays and gives the offense very good field position.Any points the Browns score will be aided by Cribbs.Prediction: The Packers aerial game will put points on the board and the Browns will continue to struggle with The Statue at the helm.Green Bay 34 Cleveland 20Scott Dryden, Senior Writer
Cincinnati Bengals vs. Chicago BearsOctober 25th 1:00 ETLine: Pick’emThe Bengals came crashing back to reality with a home loss to the Houston Texans.Houston dominated all facets of the game as QB Matt Schaub sliced and diced the Cincy defense. In the 28-17 Texan victory, Schaub threw for 392 yards. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Bengals as they face another good QB in Jay Cutler.Offense: The Bengals must rely on Cedric Benson to control the clock and limit the Bears pass rush.Benson, a former Bear, will be running with a purpose against a team that cut him a few years ago.Benson has run for 531 yards with 4 touchdowns on the season.QB Carson Palmer doesn’t appear to have the same feel for the game that he did in years past.He has been solid with a QB rating of 78.3 but has only completed 59% of his passes.Defense: The Bengals are much improved but played uninspired against the Texans. They will now face a very good passing team without their leading pass rusher Antwan Odom who is out for the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon.QB Jay Cutler likes to spread the ball around and his always a threat to throw the ball deep.Prediction: If the Bears and Cutler limit turnovers they should have immense success against an overrated Bengal secondary.Chicago 31 Cincinnati 23Scott Dryden, Senior Writer
October 24th 12:00 ETLine: Ohio State – 16There are thousands of expletives to describe the Buckeyes performance at Purdue; we will bypass those and simply describe it as atrocious. The offense was yet again horrible and the offensive line continues to be one of the worst in the league; despite having top notch recruits year end and year out.I did find an accurate description on a message board: a topic was posted questioning why the Buckeyes never make offensive adjustments, certainly an accurate inquiry, when a member defended the Buckeyes philosophy stating in the 1st half they snapped the ball on the 1st hut and in the 2nd half they snapped the ball on the 2nd hut.He/she even went as far as to say they are saving the 3rd hut for the Michigan game.Although the tongue was firmly planted in the cheek, that sums up the view of many regarding the “innovation” and “spontaneity” of the OSU offense.Head Coach Jim Tressel has been a blessing for the university. He has brought an heir of class and dignity to a program that sorely needed it.On the field Coach Tressel has brought a National Championship and a 7-1 record against nemeses Michigan. However, since January of 2007 when Ohio State laid an egg in the National Championship game against Florida, little has went right for the Buckeyes in big games.Supporters will point to the overall record and the domination within the Big Ten; critics will quickly point out the Big Ten has been pathetic over this span. The naysayers are calling for Coach Tressel to be dismissed or at least a shake up on his coaching staff. The lack of solid play from the offensive line, the big game demolitions and the overall perception of the team leaves fans in a state of limbo. Is it time for a change?Has Coach Tressel run his course in Columbus?Would an enthusiastic coach such as Ohio native Jon Gruden bring passion and an attitude to the program? No doubt Jon Gruden would bring pro experience, a passion such as Lane Kiffin has brought to Tennessee and a proven resume. Is that the answer or should Coach Tressel be given a chance to right the ship with a 2010 team that has championship potential? The Buckeyes and QB Terrelle Pryor will look to bounce back against 4-3 Minnesota in the Horseshoe. The Golden Gophers are coming off a 20-0 loss at Penn State.Prediction: QB Terrelle Pryor will look to bounce back from a dismal performance.Reportedly, Pryor received advice from LeBron James who was a teen phenom himself.Look for Pryor and the Buckeye running game to have their way with the Golden Gophers.Minnesota WR Eric Decker is one of the best not only in the Big Ten but in the entire nation. He will have the eyes of the Buckeye defenders.Ohio State 34 Minnesota 17Scott Dryden, Senior Writer
Cincinnati vs. Louisville October 24th 3:30 ET Line: Cincinnati -18
The high flying 6-0 Bearcats debuted at #5 in the initial BCS rankings.UC is now a legitimate contender for a trip to the National Championship.Critics point out, correctly, the Bearcat’s schedule doesn’t compare to the likes of Florida, Alabama, Texas and the other major players; however, the Bearcats can only play who is in their conference plus they scheduled a road game at Oregon State.Make no mistake, behind Head Coach Brian Kelly the Bearcats will be a force.UC returns to their home field after a big road victory over South Florida. In that game, stud QB Tony Pike was injured early in the contest and is doubtful for the Louisville game.Backup QB Zach Collaros ran for two scores including a 75 yard burst and ended the game with an impressive 132 yards rushing.
Prediction: The 2-4 Cardinals have struggled mightily in the 09 campaign.Cardinal QB Adam Froman will be a challenge for the UC defense but will not be able to keep up with the potent aerial attack of the Bearcats.WR Mardy Gilyard will have a big day.Cincinnati 44 Louisville 23
The Browns lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-14 in a sloppy game at Heinz Field. The game was mired with turnovers, including 5 combined in the 3rd quarter.
Browns Offense Grades:
QB- F: Derek Anderson continues to show everyone why he was average at best at Oregon State and Baltimore cut him after being a 6th round pick.Anderson has everything you want in a QB except poise, pocket presence, accuracy and mobility; in other words he has a cannon arm and that is it.Anderson is the equivalent of the guy at the driving range who hits the ball a mile; it’s not straight, he can’t putt, and he has no short game.Solomon Wilcots was very liberal in giving drops to the Browns receivers in both last week’s Buffalo game and this game.Anderson would throw the ball behind a receiver on a slant route; the intended target would reach back two yards and touch it with their finger tips and get credited with a drop.DA is simply what he is; an inaccurate QB who gets flustered even when there is no pressure as evident by his 3 turnovers in the game.A simple RB curl over the middle is difficult for Anderson to complete and he rarely hits his target in stride. For those DA supporters who point to the 2007 season, review the tape.It was a fluke year when the stars aligned and DA was still below a 60% completion rate.Coming into the Steeler game DA’s completion % was 46.He did no better going 9 of 27 against the Steelers. How does DA keep his job?He shouldn’t.Quinn played against two of the best defenses in the league in Minnesota and Denver and a half at Baltimore yet he was yanked. The Browns couldn’t have handled this situation any worse.Brady Quinn should be the starting QB with an open play book. For the rest of the season DA will simply be known as The Statue.
RB- D: Jamal Lewis continued to do his best impression of Dancing With The Stars by tap dancing to what little room was there.Lewis had a drop and was ineffective when lanes were opening.Jerome Harrison wasn’t give the touches he deserves.
WR/TE- C+: Mohamed Massaquoi should have had topped his career day with the game plan employed by the Steelers.Sure he had a couple of drops on short passes but DA was high and wide and didn’t get the ball to the rookie WR when he had single coverage.Ike Taylor was an easy target but DA didn’t have the poise to get the rookie the ball.Brian Robiskie had one catch while Chancey Stuckey had a drop. The Browns were without reliable target Steve Heiden and Robert Royal was hurt during the action.
O-Line- C+: The offensive line did have protection problems on occasion against the Steeler blitz but so does every other team in the league. In key situations the Browns gave DA a pocket but he didn’t step up instead ran into sacks. The line is getting better but John St. Clair needs to hit the pine.
O-Coordinator- C: Brian Daboll finally showed some creativity; well what is creative for him at least. The Browns employed their own version of the Wildcat, something Browns fans have been longing for the entire season, using Josh Cribbs at the QB position. However, in the formation they lined Derek Anderson up as WR.If Anderson was lined up at the WR position without a defender within 50 yards, The Statue would only turn it into a 5 yard gain. Why not employ a 4 WR set with Cribbs? The Browns finally had a scoring drive which was the result of aggressive play calling. The next possession, the Browns run in the gut of the Steeler defense on 1st and 2nd downs; Incredible!Daboll still doesn’t have a feel for the game nor does he know how to attack the defense’s weaknesses.
Defensive Grades:
D-Line- C: The line played well clogging up running lanes. In the 3-4 scheme, the d-line is responsible for clogging up the middle to allow the LB’s to make plays.Shaun Rogers and the line did just that but rarely if ever provided a consistent pass rush.
LB- F: The Linebackers were out of position throughout the game. They provided no pass rush and missed Kamerion Wimbley who was out with the flu and D’Qwell Jackson was hurt during the game.Inexplicably, a simple play where the running back slipped out into the flat was uncovered consistently which resulted in big plays.Rookie Kaluka Maiava filled in for Jackson and was victimized by underneath routes and often blew coverages. The unit as a whole was unable to contain TE Heath Miller.
DBs-F: The secondary was horrible at best.Eric Wright was abused on slant and in routes throughout the entire game.Brandon McDonald might be a good corner in a flag football league but in the NFL where contact is required he struggles mightily. On a reverse by Steeler WR Mike Wallace, McDonald had a free shot down the sidelines and instead chose to grab his uniform which resulted in more yards tacked onto an already sizable run.Browns’ fans have memories of the Mighty Mini and Top Dawg combination of Frank Minnifield and Hanford Dixon, now; they have the Toast and Skirt combination of Wright and McDonald. The safety combination of Brodney Pool and Abram Elam didn’t fare much better as the Steelers hit wide open deep routes and seem routes to the tight end.
D-Coordinator- D: Rob Ryan’s defense gave up 500 yards to the Steelers and chose to rush 3 in critical situations. There were several occasions where the secondary and linebacking unit blew coverages. The Browns did a decent job against the rush but were horrible against the pass. The Browns did have what appeared to be a critical stop near the end of the 1st half on a 4th and short situation. However, after the measurement, the referees awarded the Steelers the ball even though everyone in the world viewed the measurement as short. This resulted in a Steelers field goal and a thread of profanities from the mouth of Ryan.
Up Next: Head Coach Eric Mangini needs to live up to his mantra of accountability; the first step is putting Derek Anderson where he truly belongs, on the pine.Brady Quinn needs to be fairly evaluated and given time to grow. The 2nd step is to contact the NFL office to understand what constitutes a 1st down. The next step will be to review the right side of the o-line.With 11 picks in the 2010 draft Mangini has his eyes set on next season but Browns fans everywhere are looking for improvement this year.Lets begin with Quinn…
