Villa Anglea-St. Joseph tops Pymatuning Valley to advance

Filed under: High School Boys Basketball, Ohio Basketball — @ 10:50 pm

Another year, another Villa Angela-St. Joseph trip to Columbus for the Divsion III boys’ basketball state tournament’s Final Four. The VASJ Vikings took down Pymatuning Valley by a score of 91-71 today to win the Canton Regional and advance to the D III State Tournament for the 3rd straight season.

Starting with the pregame introductions, the PV Lakers seemed out of sync. Pymatuning Valley took an early 6-4 lead but never lead again as the Vikings lead 16-10 at the end of the 1st Quarter and 36-20 at the half. It seemed that for every PV basket, Villa had an answer, usually from Youngstown State recruit Ashen Ward who led all scorers with 30 points.

The most telling sequence came late in the 3rd Quarter. Pymatuning Valley point guard Corey Shontz hit a jumper and was fouled, sending him to the line for a possible 3-point play. Shontz missed his free throw, but VASJ knocked the ball out of bounds giving PV the ball down 20. Off the inbounds the Lakers swung the ball back to Shontz who drilled a 3-point bucket and clearly give the Lakers some solid momentum with just 5 seconds remaining in the quarter. But VASJ inbounded the ball and got it to Ward who proceeded to nail a 3-point shot at the buzzer and extend the Vikings’ lead to 67-47 after 3 Quarters.

Pymatuning Valley made several small runs in the 4th Quarter lead by 3-point shots from Shontz, Bryan Easton & Mark Riley, but could not come closer than 16. VASJ received 15 points from Klein Harper, 15 from Nate Barnes, 14 points from Brian Jenkins and 8 from Dominick Haynes. The Lakers (23-2) were lead by Shontz with 27 points and Steve Savel with 16.

With the win, Villa Angela-St. Joseph (21-4) will face the winner of tonight’s Athens Regional winner between Bishop Ready (16-8) and Sugarcreek Garaway (22-3).

Pymatuning Valley tops Ursuline in Double Overtime

Filed under: High School Boys Basketball, Ohio Basketball — @ 3:34 am

In a game featuring two run-and-gun style teams, the game between Pymatuning Valley and Youngstown Ursuline did not lack in excitement. Despite coming into the game as the Warren District winners and the AP’s #12-ranked team in the state, the Pymatuning Valley Lakers were not expected to defeat the more seasoned Ursuline Fighting Irish. Even PV’s home newspaper, the Ashtabula Star Beacon, featured a Wednesday column picking the Lakers to lose. But the Lakers would use all of this as motivation, knowing this was their chance to prove their doubters wrong.

The game started with both teams running but turning the ball over early. 5′8″ senior point guard Nick McCartney put Ursuline up 3-0 with a early trey as both teams took frequent 3-point shots which would not fall. PV’s senior point guard Corey Shontz dished to junior Mark Riley for a 3-pointer to put the Lakers up 9-7 at the 4:57 mark and Shontz again picked up an assist on the next possession as Steve Savel added two for a PV 11-7 lead. Ursuline fought back to tie the score at 11-11 before a 9-2 run by the Lakers made it 20-13 nearing the end of the 1st Quarter. The Fighting Irish held for the final possession of the quarter and cut the deficit to 20-15 heading into the 2nd Quarter.

The bucket by Ursuline to close the 1st Quarter seemed to give the Fighting Irish life as a 8-0 run gave Ursuline a 21-20 lead with 6:20 to play in the half before Shontz hit a baseline jumper to put PV back on top 22-21. Ursuline responded with a 3-point basket from senior George Williams for a 24-22 lead before a Steve Savel steal and pass to Shontz tied the game at 24 apiece. The teams went back and forth as Ursuline took a 32-30 lead into the half after outscoring the Lakers 17-10 in the 2nd Quarter.

The two teams continued to trade jabs, a theme that would play out the entire night, as a Jake Lautanen 3-pointer made it 37-36 PV with 5:41 left in the 3rd Quarter. Williams and Savel each added free throws for their respective teams before a Lautanen floater in the lane gave the Lakers a 42-39 lead with 2:39 to play in the 3rd. Williams responded with a 3-point make to tie the score at 42 and the teams traded buckets for a 44-44 tie after three quarters.

The PV and Ursuline again traded baskets before a Shontz steal and pass to Riley who assisted a basket by Lautanen put the Lakers on top 48-46. Ursuline responded to tie the game at 48, then again the score was tied at 50 when a Bryan Easton offensive rebound and put-back gave PV the 52-50 lead with 5:23 to play. McCartney answered with a jumper for Ursuline to tie the score at 52 before Easton nailed a 3-point shot for a 55-52 PV lead. The Lakers called a timeout with 4:16 to play and a 55-52 lead, but saw the Irish cut the lead to one at 55-54 as fouls were about to begin to become a factor. Savel picked up his 4th foul resulting in a missed free throw for the Irish with 3:20 to play before the game’s high-scorer, Ursuline’s Dominique Cole, was whistled for his 4th foul sending Easton to the line. Easton hit one of two free throws before Shontz was called for his 4th foul. As the fouls piled up in a short period of time, neither team could capitalize from the charity stripe. With the game tied at 56, the Fighting Irish called a timeout with 58.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Ursuline’s strategy was to stall and play for the last shot, but with 5 seconds remaining the Irish missed a lay-up that would have put them ahead. PV could not get a good look at the basket as the game headed to OT tied 56-56.

Ursuline would control most of the first overtime after taking a 61-58 lead with just under two minutes to play in the extra session. Shontz hit a jumper to cut the score to 61-60 before McCartney hit two clutch free throws to extend the lead to 63-60. Easton got the put-back on a Shontz miss to cut the lead to 63-62 before McCartney again hit two clutch free throws to extend the Ursuline lead to 65-62 with 30.4 seconds remaining. Then came the play of the game. Shontz found Savel for a lay-up as Cole committed his 5th and final foul sending Savel to the line with the Lakers now down one. With 19.4 seconds remaining Savel, a 59% free throw shooter on the season, nailed the biggest shot of his life. The Lakers defense contained Ursuline’s attempt at a game-winning shot to send the game into a second overtime tied at 65-65.

The second overtime was dominated by the Lakers as Savel nailed two more free throws for a 67-65 lead and Lautanen added a free throw himself to make it 68-65. After an Irish miss was rebounded by Riley, Laker head coach Jeremy Huber wanted a timeout with 2:24 remaining. The Lakers repeatedly passed the ball throughout their half of the court in an effort to stall before a Riley lay-up was rejected out of bounds. PV inbounded and ran the clock down to 1:24 before a Ursuline foul sent Easton to the line where he hit both free throws for a 70-65 lead. An Ursuline missed shot resulted in a John Colla offensive rebound as Riley drew his 4th foul, but Colla missed both shots from the line and Easton rebounded for PV. The Lakers added two Lautanen free throws before a 3-point bucket by McCartney cut the lead to 72-68. But the Laker lead would prove to be too much for the Fighting Irish as PV added four more free throws to seal a 76-68 double overtime win.

Dominique Cole led all scorers with 28 points for Ursuline and teammate Nick McCartney added 18 points in his final game for the Irish. PV saw all five starters in double figures lead by Steve Savel with 25 points, Jake Lautanen with 18 and Bryan Easton with 16 points while Shontz added 10 points and 9 assists.

With the win the Lakers have advanced farther than any other previous Pymatuning Valley boys’ basketball team in school history. The 1961-1962 Lakers lost an overtime thriller in this same Regional Semifinal round. The 2007-2008 Lakers will face Villa Angela-St. Joseph in the Division III Canton Regional Finals on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. The game will again be at the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse and will feature the AP #7 Vikings against the AP #12 Lakers as the Division III Tournament brackets have just 8 teams remaining alive for the 2008 Division III State Championship.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph advances beating Smithville 47-44 in OT

Filed under: High School Boys Basketball, Ohio Basketball — @ 1:58 am

As the first game in Canton came to a conclusion in overtime, fans of the Smithville Smithies could not help but wonder what could have been. Several no-calls in the 4th Quarter and OT that were obvious to the unbiased fan helped open the door for Villa Angela-St. Joseph as senior Ashen Ward nailed the game-winning 3-pointer and VASJ advanced with a 47-44 OT win. It’s hard not to sound like sour grapes, but a ball touched on the rim, a player calling timeout without possession, repeated over-the-back violations that were not called and a blatant travel just seconds before Ward’s game-winner left many fans feeling almost dirty as they filed out of Canton Memorial Fieldhouse. Credit should be given to VASJ as they did enough to come away with the win in the end, but when the favored team from the big-name, tradion-rich school that is ranked #7 in the state by the AP gets what seems to be favoritism by the officials, it’s hard not to wonder.

VASJ began the game pressing Smithville, but both teams began with cold shooting and turnovers. Smithville built an early 9-4 lead before the Vikings’ press forced three turnovers which lead to 6 points for Villa. At the end of the 1st Quarter Smithville lead Villa Angela-St. Joseph by an 11-10 score.

The 2nd Quarter saw Smithville continually build small three and four point leads only to be answered by the Vikings. A 3-point play by 6′7″ junior Kenny Kornowski put the Smithies up 24-20 with 1:40 remaining in the half, but VASJ scored the half’s final four points for a 24-24 tie at halftime.

Sparked by the halftime emergence of former VASJ star David Lighty who now plays for Ohio State, the Vikings went on a modest 6-2 run for a 30-26 lead. But Smithville then answered and took a 31-30 lead at the 2:38 mark in the 3rd Quarter and neither team scored again until the 4th.

The 4th Quarter started with a bang as the Vikings answered a Smithville bucket with a dunk by senior Klein Harper to make it 33-32. After Harper hit two free throws with 6:35 remaining, VASJ decided to slow the game down and Smithville, which was not a deep team, did not seem to mind. After nearly two minutes without a score, Villa had a 41-39 lead with 3:32 remaining before Tyler Bates of Smithville hit one of two free throws to cut the Viking lead to 41-40. VASJ again went to the stall offense before a timeout call with 1:57 saw Villa still leading by the same 41-40 score. Harper added another free throw to increase the Viking lead to 42-40 before Smithville forced a traveling violation to gain possession with 1:09 remaining, down by two points. After a foul call against VASJ, Bates nailed two clutch free throws for Smithville to tie the game at 42-42 before my earlier gripes began to come about.

With under a minute remaining and the score tied at 42, VASJ had the ball and lost possession. As players from both sides scrambled for the ball, a VASJ player seemed to fall on the ball and slide on the ground, lose possession and call a timeout before the referees called a jump ball. But the officials decided to talk it over and reversed the call to a timeout for VASJ, despite the fact that they did not seem to ever have clear possession of the ball. In my opinion the jump ball was indeed the correct call to have been made. VASJ proceeded to miss a shot after the timeout before a foul on the Vikings was called resulting in Smithville taking possession under the Viking basket with 2.1 seconds remaining. The ensuing play was a near-miss half-court shot by Bates as the game went into overtime.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph scored the first basket of the OT period after over a minute of scoreless play for a 44-42 lead. Smithville then took a shot close to the basket which was on the cylinder when a Viking player touched it and came down with the rebound as no basket interference/goaltending call was made. A Villa turnover game Smithville the ball down two as Kornowski scored a lay-up to tie the score at 44-44 with 1:25 remaining. VASJ again went into their stall offense as Ward appeared to travel just before hitting the eventual game-winner. With the score 47-44 and Villa in the lead, the Smithies had to again inbound the ball under the VASJ hoop. Another missed half court shot fell to the ground resulting in Villa Angela-St. Joseph escaping with a narrow 47-44 win.

With the victory, the Vikings, ranked #7 in Ohio Division III boys basketball, advanced to play the winner of the Pymatuning Valley/Ursuline game which PV won in 2OT. VASJ and PV will face off on Saturday night March 8th @ 7:30 pm in the Canton Memorial Fieldhouse.

Pymatuning Valley defeats Newton Falls for Warren District Championship

Filed under: High School Boys Basketball, Ohio Basketball — @ 10:42 pm

With nearly the entire village of Andover in attendance on Saturday night, the Pymatuning Valley Lakers defeated the Newton Falls Tigers 50-40 in the Warren District Division III Championship game. Pymatuning Valley (22-1) was led by senior point guard Corey Shontz who scored 27 points as PV’s defense in the second half was the difference in the game. With the score tied at 23 at halftime, the Lakers forced several turnovers and led by as many 12 in the 3rd Quarter. Newton Falls (18-5) would trim the lead to as few as 6 in the 4th Quarter as Shontz got into some questionable foul trouble, but key offense-for-defense substitions by PV coach Jeremy Huber helped fend off the Tigers.

With the win, PV advances to the Regional Semifinals in Canton where they will face the Salem District Champions, Youngstown Ursuline (14-9). PV and Ursuline will tip-off @ 8 pm on Wednesday, March 5th at the Canton Fieldhouse in Canton, Ohio.

Newton Falls defeats Champion setting up rematch with PV

Filed under: High School Boys Basketball, Ohio Basketball — @ 9:58 am

The Warren District Division III Boys basketball Tournament Championship Game is set as #2 Newton Falls advanced by defeating #3 Champion 62-48 on Thursday. Newton Falls rode a balanced attack to the victory with three players in double-figures scoring led by 6′11″ Marcus Fowler’s 17 points. Newton Falls jumped out to a 34-21 halftime lead and was able to fend off Champion (17-5) for the 14-point victory.

With the win, Newton Falls sets up a rematch with Pymatuning Valley, the #1 seed in the Warren District. Newton Falls will look to avenge last season’s 61-38 loss to PV in their Sectional/District game last March that saw Pymatuning Valley open the game 15-2 after the 1st Quarter. The winner of Saturday night’s game will advance to Regionals in Canton to face the Salem District Winner.

Pymatuning Valley advances to District Championship

Filed under: High School Boys Basketball, Ohio Basketball — @ 12:55 pm

The Warren District Division III Tournament resumed on Wednesday night at Howland High School as the Pymatuning Valley Lakers defeated the Garfield G-Men 73-60. After Garfield scored the game’s first bucket, the Lakers went on a 19-4 run to jump out to a 25-10 lead after the 1st Quarter. PV then expanded their lead without much trouble to 41-21 at the half. In the second half, Pymatuning Valley appeared poised to run away with the game before two early 3rd Quarter timeouts by Garfield shifted the momentum. Garfield outscored PV 13-4 to close the 3rd Quarter at 50-34 PV. The 4th Quarter was much like the 3rd Quarter as Garfield continued to clowly chip away, cutting PV’s lead to just 8 at 63-55 with just over 2 minute remaining. But Garfield began fouling before the clock hit 2:00 and the stratgic move backfired. Pymatuning Valley went 10-12 from the free throw line to outscore the G-Men 10-5 in the final two minutes as PV won the game 73-60.

With the win, the #1-seeded Lakers advance to the District Championship game to be played on Saturday night @ 7 pm at Howland HS against the winner of Thursday night’s #2 Newton Falls vs. #3 Champion game.

The Lakers were led by seniors Steve Savel (17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Corey Shontz (20 points, 7 steals, 10 assists).

Game Notes:

  • It is still unclear to most what “G-Men” are. The Garfield students copied cheers made popular by Atlanta Braves and Florida State fans (Indian war chant) and the Florida Gators’ “Gator Chop.” They also used the “Hook ‘Em Horns” symbol made popular by the Texas Longhorns.
  • Newton Falls, the #2 seed in the bracket, had a scout on the court the entire game as the father of one Newton Falls player is also a member of the Athletic Department of Howland High School.
  • Pymatuning Valley and Newton Falls met in the District Semifinals in 2007 with PV coming away with the victory over the Orange and Black.
